Student Counselling

Several Student Counsellors and a Chaplain work onsite at Star of the Sea College.

The student counsellors are registered with the Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria and/or are Members of the Australian Psychological Society.

Student Counsellors provide support to students through individual and/or group counselling, and consultancy and support to teachers and parents.

Prevention, empowerment, and a proactive team approach are emphasised.

Counselling is available to all students of the College.

Consultation occurs with staff and parents where necessary. We maintain close contact with the School Principal, Student Co-ordinator, Year Level Co-ordinators, Individual Differences Co-ordinator, and Homeroom teachers.

Student participation in counselling is voluntary.  Students have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, to receive care that is non-discriminatory and non-judgemental, and to have their privacy (confidentiality) maintained and protected.

Students may self-refer for counselling or staff or parents may refer them. The student counsellors work closely with the family counsellor and regularly cross-refer.

Short, medium, or long-term counselling may be offered during the student’s enrolment depending on the nature of the counselling issues.

The length and type of counselling offered to students is based upon the counsellors’ discretion, caseload, and overall demands on the counselling team.
